Internationally Recruited Midwives Welcome Programmme (IRMWP)
The IRMWP was created by ASAM to assist midwives who have trained overseas and recently relocated to the UK for positions within the NHS. We understand that adapting to a new country can be difficult, so we aimed to help midwives navigate their entry into UK and NHS maternity services.
This initiative was funded by the Florence Nightingale Foundation and was implemented in 2022. It featured a workshop-based program that included a midwife buddy scheme, ASAM membership, a development plan, and networking opportunities. Regular check-in sessions were arranged for buddies and internationally educated midwives, providing a platform for discussion and a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by our midwives. We continue to offer support to our internationally educated midwives as part of our ASAM membership.

Midwife Buddy, 2022
“Having a support from colleague in this difficult journey definitely is beneficial. I have been through the same 10 years ago and wished I had something like this. I was navigating into this process alone and nearly lost. Had many questions but no one to answer to them. This is why truly believe is more than needed.”
